False ceiling collapses at CWG venue

New Delhi: In more embarrassment for the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee a section of the false ceiling near the weightlifting stage collapsed at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Wednesday.

However, Cabinet Secretary KM Chandreshekhar said that the collapse of the false ceiling was not a big issue

“The cables which were to be set up for the data network were placed on the false ceiling and due to the weight of the cables the ceiling fell off. It’s a minor thing and it will be corrected. It’s not a matter to be worried about,” said Chandreshekhar.

Chandreshekhar also claimed that all match venues and practice venues along with the Games Village were ready.

“We have put in place a damage control exercise. There have been some complaints about the residential rooms. We have asked the LT General to set up a meeting and look into it,” he said.

The incident comes just a day after an under-construction foot overbridge collapsed injuring 27 people outside the same stadium. Four people out of the 27 injured are said to be in critical condition.

The bridge, whose construction was to be completed soon, was to connect the parking lot of the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium where the opening and closing functions of Commonwealth Games are to be held.

With less than two weeks to go for the CWG, the two mishaps could not have come at a worse time.

In July, a Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) report had slammed various agencies of the Delhi government and leveled some serious charges of corruption.

According to the report the PWD had inflated cost for various projects to mislead authorities. An amount of Rs 3. 68 crore was wrongfully added to justify transportation costs.

An amount of Rs 25.84 crore for labour was deemed ‘unjustified’ by the CVC report. The uneconomic designs by private consultants had led to higher than usual costs. And finally the test done to evaluate the strength of the pavements was not done.
