Renowned Sitar maestro Pandit Ravi Shankar, 92, passed away in San Diego on Tuesday at 4.30 pm, Pacific Time. He was hospitalised last Thursday after he complained of breathing difficulties.
The Indian ambassador in the US Nirupama Rao confirmed Shankar’s death with a tweet. ” Pandit Ravi Shankar.Mourn passing of a musical genius and gentle soul. Attended his last concert Nov in Calif. He played with such passion,” she messaged.
Shankar was India’s best known music ambassador who had singlehandedly internationalised the ancient music of the country. He received the Bharat Ratna in 1999. He was a Rajya Sabha member from 1986 to 1992.
He is survived by his wife Sukanya and daughters Anoushka and Norah Jones, also a musician.
