Court fines Bata Stores for using plastic bags

New Delhi: Taking a serious note of the environmental hazards posed by plastic bags, a city court has slapped footwear major Bata Shoe Stores with a fine of Rs one lakh for using the banned item in violation of rules.

Metropolitan Magistrate (MM) Shailender Malik in his order issued recently also directed the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) to utilise the penalty money (Rs one lakh) for distribution of bio-degradable bags among small shopkeepers to create awarness about the eco-friendly steps.

The court also directed manager of the store Mahmud Hasan to be present in the court till its rising for the day.

Last year in September, the state pollution watchdog had filed a case against the Bata Shoe Stores and Hasan alleging they were storing and selling shoes and footwears in the plastic bags in their premises at Kashmiri Gate.
