The accident took place late on Friday night when the woman, allegedly in an inebriated state, drove her Honda CRV into a group of policemen, a motorcycle and a taxi injuring four constables, a sub-inspector and a civilian.
Sub-inspector Dinanath Shinde and motorcycle rider Afzal Kanojia later died at the hospital.
“A black coloured car was travelling from Opera House to Churchgate. It hit a taxi under the bridge. Five to six people including an officer and some constables were injured. They are being treated in Bombay Hospital. The lady is in custody,” said Traffic Police ACP Anil Takalkar.
The policemen were stationed at Maharishi Karve Road in Marine Lines in South Mumbai to check drunken driving when the incident took place.
The injured are being treated at the Bombay and GT hospitals. The 27-year-old women, Alvira Haveliwala, was arrested and taken for a medical examination to determine the presence of alcohol in her body.
The examination revealed that 457 ml of alcohol was in her blood sample. Anything over 50ml comes under the category of high consumption. Police are also exploring the possibility of the woman being on drugs.
