Mumbai: Goa Police on Friday arrested the main accused in the alleged rape of a nine year old Russian tourist who was sexually assaulted at Goa’s Arambol beach on January 26. Earlier in the day, the accused’s accomplice was also arrested
Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Ravindra Yadav confirmed that his men had arrested accused Aman Bharadwaj from Mumbai’s Chembur area today. Bhardwaj is a resident of Uttar Pradesh and was in Goa as a tourist.
Bhardwaj did so when his accomplice Anil, who is from Madhya Pradesh’s Hoshangabad district, diverted the mother’s attention by striking a conversation with her.
The accused duo are colleagues in a pharmaceutical firm at Dhargal industrial estate and were part of a group, that had gone to Arambol for a picnic on Republic Day.
Russia had warned that it would be forced to issue a travel advisory to its citizens against travelling to Goa if the incidents of abuse against Russians did not stop and the guilty were not punished.
Stepping in, the Centre has also asked Goa to provide adequate security to tourists. “Goa government should, on priority basis, take some steps to prevent such incidents,” Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni told reporters in Delhi today.
