Patna: Over 100 people have been sentenced to death and another 8,143 to life imprisonment out of a total of 45,467 persons convicted in Bihar in the last four years.
Among those facing prison sentence, 2,661 have been ordered jail terms of more than 10 years, official sources said today.
State police headquarters sources said as many as 3,622 persons were convicted in the first three months of the year. This included 7 death sentences and 455 sentenced to life.
“This has been possible due to regular monitoring of the speedy trial of pending cases … In the past, the conviction rate in Bihar was very low. Only about 5,000-10,000 could be convicted in a decade,” a senior police officer said.
Last year, a total of 13,146 people were convicted. Of them 12 were awarded death sentence, 1824 life imprisonment and 375 imprisoned for more than 10 years.
