Kolkata: The West Bengal government will provide monthly stipend to 15,000 children in the state in a bid to promote sporting talents, Sports Minister Kanti Ganguly said today.
Replying to questions in the Assembly, he said that 15,000 children with sporting talents, aged between 12 and 16 years, will be provided a monthly stipend of Rs 400 each.
The stipend would continue till the children attained the age of 19, he said while claiming that West Bengal was the only state in the country to introduce such a stipend.
He said that the state cabinet had recently approved a sports policy under which 20 sports disciplines would be promoted in the state.
Pointing out that only upto four per cent of the children in the states were involved in sports, he said the government was making efforts to include sports as part of a general education.
