Handy contributions from the Deccan Chargers middle order powered them to a challenging 171-6 against Delhi Daredevils at the Barabati Stadium on Sunday.
Rohit Sharma scored 45, while Andrew Symonds and Herschelle Gibbs chipped in with 35 and 31 respectively but neither could carry on to guide their team to a bigger score after captain Adam Gilchrist won the toss and decided to bat.
Delhi captain Dinesh Karthik opened the bowling with spinner Amit Mishra, who struck immediately to remove opener Mohnish Mishra, but Gilchrist provided a a rapid start from the other end before his departure for 24.
Delhi spinners Amit Mishra, Sarabjit Ladda and Yogesh Nagar snared Deccan’s first three wickets on a two-paced pitch at the Barabati Stadium, before Rohit Sharma lifted his team to a promising total. Rohit hit three fours and three sixes in his 30-ball knock. Tirumalasetti Suman anchored his side with 29 not out.
Delhi got off to a winning start to their campaign but lost their way with two consecutive defeats, while Deccan have been on a high after winning their last match against Kings XI Punjab.
Both teams made three changes to their squad with Delhi bringing in Moises Henriques, Sarabjit Ladda and Yogesh Nagar for Tillakaratne Dilshan, Rajat Bhatia and Pradeep Sangwan. Deccan included Mohnish Mishra, Rahul Sharma and Venugopal Rao for VVS Laxman, Jaskaran Singh and Anirudh Singh.
